Build Me Up Buttercup
Oil on board
20.5 x 25 in gold frame
I was in the 9th grade when I went to my first father daughter dance.
My dad wore his suit, and I had on a turtleneck sweater dress and pumps.
It was in the cafeteria, and I was shocked at the actual dancing happening that night.
We entered a twist contest and made it to the last round. Dad was really good! I had no idea that he had won a twist contest when he was in high school.
So much singing and dancing – I was sweating in that dress, and dad took off his suit jacket.
The dance floor was packed when this song came on and the crowd roared:
“I need you
More than anyone,
Darling
You know that I have from the start
So Build me up
Buttercup, don’t
Break my heart”
When we got home, he said his feet hurt, we laughed and ate pizza.
It was kind of a perfect night.
He was always there for the little things which meant the most.
