Sweet Child O' Mine

Sweet Child O' Mine

Oil on board, 30x30, black frame

I can still see your small hand in Grandpop’s, dancing through the hospital room door to meet your baby sister. You climbed up, placed your beloved snowman beside her, and from that moment on, it was as if the two of you had always been a pair.

You anticipated her every move. You loved big. You never took your eyes off your sissy.

I remember “tubby time,” the two of you in the bath, certain it was your job to take care of her. Side by side in everything; building worlds, racing scooters, wrapped up in your own little universe.

And I watched you, in awe of the love you carried so naturally.

Years later, dropping you off for freshman year, it was always there—you comforting us, playlists ready for the ride home and this was one of the songs.

“Whoa, oh-whoa

Sweet child o’mine

Whoa, whoa, oh-

Oh-oh

Sweet love of mine”

What a privilege it is to watch our children grow and to see that the most beautiful parts of who they are were never something they had to become, only something they’ve always been.
