This past weekend was THON at Penn State.

Penn State THON is the world’s largest student-run philanthropic event —
a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon to fight pediatric cancer.
And this year, my daughter was one of the 700 dancers.

We spent the weekend cheering from the stands and supporting her on the floor when we were lucky enough to get passes. The mental and physical grit it takes to stand for 46 hours is hard to describe. But what struck me most was the tenderness woven throughout it all.

I got goosebumps standing in front of the “Remember Your Why” wall.
I got choked up reading the handwritten notes from families in the thick of battling cancer.

Their words were a beautiful reminder to stop and share love and gratitude even in the darkest of days.

It made me think about my own “why.”

Why I paint birds.
Why I name each piece after a song.
Why every piece holds a story.

I create art because life is both fragile and breathtaking.
Because joy and grief often sit side by side.
Because sometimes the only way I know how to process it all is to pick up my brush and create.

Thank you for being here — for caring about the stories behind the work, and for reminding me of my why❤️

💕Where Art & Healing Meet💕

This is my dear friend Amy, standing in front of You Are the Sunshine of My Life.

I painted this piece for the large wall at Bryn Mawr Hospital during a season when Amy was on her own health journey, spending much of the year in and out of appointments. At the same time, I was quietly working through self-doubt and a difficult situation of my own.

When I began this painting, the song immediately played in my head and Amy came to mind—her presence, her light, and her heartfelt friendship.

Creating it lifted me out of my own fog and shifted my perspective. I never told her about the painting; I wanted her first encounter with it to be a surprise, waiting for her in the main entrance.

The first time Amy saw it, she had walked into the hospital feeling anxious. Then she looked up at the wall and felt her heart slow down and the tension leave her body. When she read the story, she knew—it was about us. She called me in tears, and we cried together.

We both needed that painting.

It healed parts of us.

Sometimes a painting knows what we need before we do.

🚙 Life Is A Highway

How is it already 2026?

I always remind myself to not over schedule in December and somehow, between parties, movie nights, shopping, wrapping, and working, it’s over.

I kicked off the new year with a quick trip to explore Chicago with my daughter, as she will be moving after graduation (which, I’m still processing!).

She diligently researched and made notes of the neighborhoods to visit and places to explore.

I however, had no agenda.

Just a passenger in her car, enjoying the ride.

“Life is a highway
I wanna to ride it all
night long”

I liked it.

Maybe this is the year I ease up and savor the journey as it comes.

Wishing you less bumps in the road and more joy in the new year!

I have two wonderful friends from high school.

I have known them since I was 14.

He’s very organized with his packing and usually has it finished the night before and waiting at the door (so not me!).

It’s the perfect time for me to sneak in a little card between his clothes.

And when I go to bed there’s usually a note under my pillow from him.

My freshman year in college I picked a school 400 miles from home.

It never occurred to me how I would get back on holiday breaks, until my dad broke the news to me that I needed to figure out how to take the Greyhound bus home.

It was 11 hours long and made 3 stops.

I was never so happy to see the signs on the turnpike that I recognized.

As I got closer, I didn’t realize how homesick I was.

There’s nothing like being home.

When I was 14 years old, I got a knock on the door from my neighbor.

I don’t see them very often, but when I do I pay attention to where I am and watch them as long as possible.

After all, I wouldn’t want to miss a greeting.

The love I have for my children is unconditional.

When they were little, it was my job to keep them safe and protected.

Now that they are adults my role has changed.

It’s different and has taken me a while to understand the new cadence.

They don’t need me on a daily basis, but my mother’s heart is always open sending them love, because when I close my eyes, they are still two little girls holding my hands.

When I have a deadline (and I’ve procrastinated long enough) I go into overdrive and I feel like I can get a week’s worth of things finished in a day.

Maybe it’s the adrenaline?

Could be the caffeine...

When I was a kid we had a stack of Christmas albums on the stereo turn table.

All the classics from the 60’s and 70’s.

The cardboard album covers were well worn, and the corners frayed a bit.

I remember my dad showing me the art of placing the needle on the album with the gentlest touch.

My dad drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and mom was in charge of the radio.

When they would get in the car mom would turn up this song and roll down the window and wave goodbye.

In high school we made spirit tags (candy taped to construction paper and a team cheer written in sharpie) and pinned them to our school uniforms.

We handed them out to our teammates and by the end of the day we were covered in them.

Such a fun way to get us pumped up for gameday.

But I think my favorite part was the loud warm up music in the gym!

When my girls were little, they couldn’t wait to go outside when it snowed.

It took forever to wrangle them into their snow suits and boots, but when they got out there, they stayed for hours building snowmen.

I met my husband at basketball camp.

I would see him occasionally in and out of the office. In the evenings I would go running on dinner breaks and one day he asked me if he could join.

I said sure and halfway thru the run, I saw a patch of tiger lily’s. We commented on how beautiful they were, and he picked one and gave it to me. I knew in that moment that something was different.

So many hummingbirds were here this summer.

Didn’t realize they could be so territorial. But when they are in harmony zooming through the air, it’s breathtaking and peaceful.

🎄Holiday Road - Day 1

One of my favorite holiday movies is Christmas Vacation.

I especially love when they go out to pick the family Christmas tree and marvel at it in the field, then put it on the car and it’s enormous! Ahh, such a classic!

We had a year like that - our tree was all alone in a giant field waiting to be taken home. When we got it on the stand, it barely fit in the corner. We had to shove it back and move the furniture around it - ha!

There are shoes piled by my back door and random bags on tables and counters and I couldn’t be happier because my babies are home.

We have a tradition, and it came from my mother- in- law. She didn’t play Christmas music in the house until Thanksgiving morning. She would load up the turn table with her favorite albums and blast the stereo and wake up the house!

We do the same thing.

I started dating my husband at the beginning of sophomore year in college.

We knew each other’s class schedules by heart, and I could time exactly when he would be walking across campus.

I looked at my watch a lot that semester!

“Why do birds
Suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you”

Those butterflies in my stomach had me on high alert those days.

No cell phones allowing us to text or track locations.

Just the pure excitement of new love!

I’ve never been good at small talk.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good conversation; the kind that you jump into with both feet.

My dear friend says to me all the time: “Kimi, we always end up nose to nose deep in conversation.”

And I realized something as I was painting this piece.

These are the paintings I love the most.

Aside from them feeling warm and cozy, it’s the deep connection I feel when engaged in heartfelt conversation.

That moment when I feel seen and loved.

I feel safe.

It’s everything.
